Don't Worry Be Happy - The Root of Stress 07-12-2026

Jul 12, 2026    Pastor John Dewberry

This powerful message confronts us with an uncomfortable truth: worrying is essentially telling God we don't trust Him. Drawing from Proverbs 3:5-6, we're challenged to examine whether we truly trust God with all our hearts or just give Him the parts of ourselves we don't like. The sermon unpacks the biblical definition of worry as a state of distress about the future—fundamentally a lack of trust in God's provision. We're reminded that stress is the fruit of worry, choking our ability to trust anyone, including our Creator. The message uses vivid imagery, comparing worry to self-inflicted strangulation, where we literally choke ourselves with anxiety over things we cannot control. The African wild dogs hunting strategy becomes a striking metaphor for how Satan identifies our weak spots and runs us down until we're too exhausted to fight. But there's hope: Psalm 34:4 offers the antidote—'I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.' When we humble ourselves and genuinely cast our burdens on God, we discover He truly cares. The question isn't whether God can handle our problems; it's whether we'll stop trying to control outcomes and surrender completely to His will.
